If you're a job recruiter, is summer the best time for you to take a vacation? There are different schools of thought on this. Some believe that summer is best because it's a slow time of year when everyone is on vacation. Others feel this is the time to use your job recruiting software and get ready for the fall. They believe you should take a vacation around the holidays instead. No one works the week between Christmas and New Year's. Maybe that's the best time to take a few days off.

Small business owners, human resource managers, and recruiters never really get time off. They always need to be mindful of what's coming around the next bend in the road. That has never been clearer than it is in this economy. Financial prospects change in the blink of an eye and hiring or cutting back on workers could be a reality today when it was unthinkable yesterday. The recruiters who are most successful in this climate are the ones who use their recruitment tracking system to keep a reserve pool of good prospects they can call in for work on short notice.

Recruiters who manage and plan with the top applicant tracking systems can take vacations any time they like. If you use web based recruiting software, you can take your laptop with you and check in as often as you feel you need to. New significant others have a hard time with that; spouses know to expect it. You are in a business where being available all the time is a requirement. It doesn't mean you can't still relax and enjoy life. The recruitment tracking system gives you the ability to be able to do that, but you still need to be open to spending an hour or two of your vacation working.

If you are going to take a summer vacation, take the week after the Fourth of July or either the last week of July or the First Week of August. Don't take your vacation on the week of the Fourth because that's like a week off anyway. You'll be wasting one of the most relaxing times of the year in the office – one where you can upgrade your database or get some old reports done. If you look back on previous years you'll see it's actually the week following that week when everyone goes on vacation.

For those looking to do the winter holiday vacation, the rules are the same. Christmas to New Year's is a dead time around the office, so use it to do paperwork. As a recruiter you know that there's always a report to write, incidents to document, and files to be put away. Doing any of those tasks during a busy time of the year is almost impossible. Do it while the office is calm. Go on vacation the first week of the New Year or the week after Thanksgiving. If you travel during either of those weeks you'll pay less and there will be no lines anywhere you go.
